Who We Are
Friends of the Legal Resources Centre of South Africa, Inc.
Friends of the LRC is an organization that exists to facilitate support for the Legal Resources Centre (LRC) in South Africa. Our name, “Friends of,” serves as a convenient way to identify our affiliation with the foreign organization and our role as a U.S.-based charity. As a tax-exempt entity under Code Section 501(c)(3), we operate independently from the LRC, as required by U.S. tax law.
Location and Tax-Exempt Status:
Our headquarters are based in Washington, DC, with the following address: 712 H Street NE #944, Washington, DC 20002, USA. We have been tax-exempt since November 1981, and our organization’s Tax Identification Number (EIN) is 52-1188054.
Classification and Nonprofit Designation:
We fall under the NTEE (National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities) classification of International Human Rights (Q70) and Fund Raising and/or Fund Distribution (S12). Additionally, we hold the nonprofit tax code designation of 501(c)(3). This means that donations made to our organization are tax-deductible in accordance with applicable tax regulations.
Governance and Control:
Our governing board is responsible for overseeing our operations, maintaining control over grant-making, and making financial decisions. It is essential to note that the board is not authorized to delegate control of our operations or grant-making to the foreign organization we support, in accordance with the guidelines set forth by U.S. tax law.

At Friends of the LRC, our primary focus is to support the work of the Legal Resources Centre and help advance its mission of promoting human rights, equality, and social justice in South Africa. We work in close collaboration with the LRC, providing financial assistance, coordinating joint initiatives, and raising awareness of their impactful work both within the United States and globally.
